Why This Work Matters
Hadithi artisans live and work alongside the wildlife-rich landscapes of Tsavo, one of Kenya’s great wilderness areas. Here, people and wildlife share the same landscape, and the wellbeing of one is closely tied to the other.
For many women, craft is part of everyday life, fitted around farming, family and other responsibilities. The income from their work gives women more choices and helps support their families.
In a place where livelihoods and wildlife are so closely connected, creating more ways to earn a living matters greatly. It helps reduce pressure on the land and its natural resources — benefiting both people and wildlife.
THE SISAL STORY
Materials From Here
Much of what our artisans work with is available in Kenya. Sisal, in particular, has a long history of being grown and used here. It is harvested, prepared and worked by hand, then turned into baskets and other pieces by artisans who know the material well.
Other materials used across our collections are sourced in Kenya too, from the beads used in Maasai designs to the fabrics and leather used in our sewn and leather pieces.
Using materials that are available within Kenya means less needs to travel before it reaches the artisan. It also keeps more of the work — and the value it creates — close to home.
