Beading means a vital income for her (and for all the 1500 women in the women groups that Hadithi now supports). The money goes a long way, especially in the dry season, when food gets scarce. Beading provides her with some financial stability, money to pay school fees and buy food.
❥ The conservation of a threatened forest and it's wildlife. When harvests fail, people turn to other ways to provide an income for the family. It is not uncommon in Tsavo that people turn to cutting trees to turn them into charcoal, or poaching wildlife in the area. An income for beading is the alternative we can offer.
❥ And of course, to keep the beautiful ancient tradition of Maasai beading part of the present and the future!

Made by hand by our artisans in south-eastern Kenya from a local palm called Magangachi, following traditional weaving techniques.
There are a few steps in this labour intensive process. First all the leaves are split in narrow strips. These are braided into a long wide strap. This strap is then made into a basket by coiling up the strap from the middle of the bottom of the basket, and sewn down with sisal string to itself as it gets coiled up.
The result is a very light and very strong basket made from local palm leaf, perfect for market shopping, or storing things at home.
Available in Plain Palm, Turmeric Yellow, Coral Red and Airforce Blue.
The Colourful patterned baskets are woven with the natural colour variants of the material, and patterned with strips of coloured palm, dyed in the Hadithi Dye centre.
The Plain basket will not use any commercial dyes, but will still have the natural variety of colours the natural material can show. There are natural shades of yellow green grey and beige to look out for.
Then the basket is finished by our leather craftsmen in Buguta disabled group, with round short handles made of locally and naturally tanned goat leather.

The safari animal collection is crafted by the Buguta disabled group. In the village called Buguta, their sowing workshop provides 5 women with a stable income. Other members of Buguta disabled group are basket weavers (all members of the group are mothers of disabled children, or disabled themselves). They thrive under the kind and careful lead of mama Leah, in a wheelchair herself. Note, all the real safari animals can be found in the wild nearby!
Material 100% cotton traditional kitenge or khanga fabric, polyester stuffing.
